Lower difficulty levels are a robust roleplay with the drama in your hands. Wildermyth integrates all this wonderfully into its design. My latest retired to become a judge, imparting her wisdom to the daughter of the friend who died saving her life. A hero might fall in love, take up painting, or walk off one night, and return months later withdrawn and sad. Another group won fourteen years of peace between chapters. By the finale the world was saved, but permanently marred. If you want to get a DnD-like experience without spending a day setting up, and making someone DM, then Wildermyth is for you.I was too slow in one chapter, and never unravelled the enemy plot. Getting to experience this all in co-op is also a big plus, and the combat is nothing to scoff at, but is not unfairly hard for no reason. There are tons of campaigns and scenarios to choose from of differing lengths so you'll be getting your money's worth. The greatest things going for this game are definitely in how easy it is to get into while have an amazing immersive story. Eventually, they will become the story, as the first character you've created passes away, but your legacy will live on. They can adventure with you, and be a part of your story. Maybe you'll have a child and your story will be passed down. The relationships you've made and how you've interacted with others will be remembered. This character you've created will fight many battles, meet people of all kinds, grow old, and eventually they will live on as a memory. A lot of these choices are impactful to the gameplay, but also in forging your character's personality and identity in the storyline. You have a wide variety of options for dialogue choices every time the story parts come up. I think what's so great about it is that it feels like a really good DM is telling the story. Where the game really shines though is in its story, as you really get immersed in the world your characters live in. Environments/terrain can also play a part in battles, as the mage class can "infuse" with objects or terrain and cast different types of magic according to the material it's made out of. On easier difficulties especially, you can definitely just choose perks that seem more fun.
I do think it's not necessary to have every class though, so if you're playing co-op you won't have to force friends to play a tank or something if they don't want to. The game also explains every stat when you hover over them.Ĭombat is turn-based and on harder difficulties you really have to think about what perks work best with your party. With that said, you don't really have to worry about min-maxing in Wildermyth, the stats are on the simple side and are straightforward in what they do. With 4 perks to choose from per level, you can quickly get a build going for specific playstyles. Without needless complexity, it more than makes up for in spades with its storytelling.Īlthough the classes are basic (holy trinity - warrior, ranger, mage), you will get to make very unique builds since you get to choose perks every time you level.
That is not to say this game is shallow though. Your characters have decent customization options, with less of the dice rolling for stats and reading tons of guides, and more of making your character pretty with an interesting background.
There are difficulties of all kinds to choose from, with some extra features to tailor the campaign easier or harder to your tastes. Although it shares some similarities to DnD, it's much easier to get into while keeping a strong sense of roleplaying.
